Malta’s Giant Leads National Basketball Team To Historic Victory

Samuel Deguara, who at 7-ft-5 is Malta’s tallest man, led the national basketball team to a crushing victory over Norway in yesterday’s final of the FIBA European Championship for Small Nations.

History was beckoning for the national side last night, with Malta never winning gold in the biannual competition since it was introduced back in 1988. Yet they saw off Norway by 75-59 in San Marino last night, with Deguara scoring 33 points himself.

The result means Malta won all four of its games this competition, having previously seen off Andorra, Ireland and Gibraltar.

Meanwhile, the Maltese women’s basketball team also performed admirably last night, seeing off Norway by 67-59 in the semi-final to earn themselves a bronze medal.
