Maltese Houses Are Officially Impossible To Warm

It’s official: it is harder to keep Maltese homes warm than homes in the rest of Europe, an EU Energy Union report has said.

Although electricity costs for Maltese homeowners and business owners have actually been going down over the last decade, many in Malta still have a major problem with keeping their homes insulated and “adequately warm” in the colder months.

With Maltese houses built specifically to withstand the summer heat, and due to most other European countries building their houses with harsh winters in mind, Maltese houses have been deemed the worst in Europe to withstand the cold weather.

Unsurprisingly, the people who will suffer the most are people already at risk of poverty – and this puts them at an even greater risk. Lower-income households will find it hard to cough up the cash to insulate their house for just three or four cold months in a year.

Most Maltese homes, especially the older ones, do not have adequate insulation for the winter months, and this can lead to a very cold interior, as well as problems resulting from damp and mould that can be both destructive to your home, as well as costly.

Anti-poverty campaigner Charles Miceli told Lovin Malta that “according to 2016 statistics there were 28,811 persons who couldn’t afford to keep their home adequately warm in winter,” which is more than the combined populations of Birkirkara and Valletta.

The president of the Malta Developers Association Sandro Chetcuti has even called for a more “holistic approach” when building new homes, and said that new buildings should be required to reach acceptable levels of energy efficiency, especially for the winter months.

There are some things you can do that will help you keep your home warmer during the winter, if you act before winter really hits.

With the cold season right around the corner, and with Malta experiencing some of the coldest weather in a while, Maltese homeowners best be prepared: winter is seriously coming.
