Maltese Panto Held In Complete Darkness Will Be A Global First

Fun for the whole family is only true when everyone can participate. While panto is a Christmas tradition for many, people with visual impairments cannot enjoy the not-so-subtle visual gags and exchanges that make it so memorable.

But this Christmas, Teatru Malta plans to turn all that on its head.

Gawgaw, A Panto In The Dark is exactly what it says on the tin, and will use the latest in 3D sound technology to shake things up in the industry. Audiences who attend will be treated to an adventure for all the senses… except their sight.

Bold scents, cute textures and an original story that will stay with you for long after the show is over, you really can’t afford to miss this show.

“Open your ears and close your eyes; the Gawgaw is coming.”

With no visual cues to build off, the audience will envisage the characters as they please, peeling away a layer of superficiality that allows audiences to connect better with the characters’ backstory and the message they’re trying to portray.

Written and directed by Marta Vella and Vikesh Godhwani, the show features just four actors playing a whole host of different roles throughout the performance. The panto’s dame, Chucky Bartolo, is joined by the talents of Joseph Zammit, Davinia Hamilton and Samuel Farrugia.

“From the start our aim was to create a show where everyone in the audience would have the same experience,” said a spokesperson for Teatru Malta. “Because of this we made the decision that the show would be in pitch darkness. It felt superfluous to create a performance that still needed visuals in order to enjoy its full experience”

Running from the 19th to the 23rd of December, the show will take place at Esplora’s Planetarium, and is completely family friendly. The show is so exciting as a concept, even the President has endorsed the event!
