The first weekend of September is off to the races here in Malta, and it’s already shaping up to be one very eventful couple of days.

Kicking off early tonight with one of the biggest bands of all Noughties indie kids, here are eight events to get you in the dancing, jamming or jumping mood this weekend.

Thursday 30th August

1. Indie icons Kaiser Chiefs taking Malta by storm

Are you ready to belt out Ruby-Ruby-Ruby-Rubayy like it’s 2007? Everyone’s favourite indie band from the Noughties is finally coming to the island, and the event is set to get thousands of people jumping to Aria tonight. Opening for the legends will be local heavy punk rockers BILA with an intense warm-up sure to get your blood boiling.

2. A night with three guys and six instruments by the beach

Yep, that’s literally what this is.

Known for their awesome jamming sessions, Kyle Drakard, Matthew John Scicluna and Melchior Sultana will be coming together at Sliema’s Surfside this evening for one groovy Thursday night.

Drums, guitar, violin, bass, keys, beats. The whole lot. Just coming from three guys instead of six though.

4. Techno’s back at the heart of it all

Liquid will be hosting another one of its weekly treats of dark tunes, pumping techno, and eclectic electro this weekend.

This time, closing August off will be local promoters Dark Force with a five-DJ lineup that kicks off at 10pm and doesn’t end till the wee hours of the next morning. Get a good sleep before heading to San ?wann.

Saturday 1st September

5. The summer’s biggest day for the local alternative scene is finally back

If you’ve ever immersed yourself in Malta’s alternative music scene, then you’ve definitely heard of Sickfest before. The musical festival has been consistently offering up some amazing acts from Malta and beyond, and this year is no exception.

Spinola’s Tigullio will be turned into a five-area festival extravaganza that will see six live bands and 28 DJs take the stage throughout Saturday. Areas include a special Dungeons & Drag(ons) themed party courtesy of Lollipop, a market stall selling everything from band merch to actual Souvenirs That Don’t Suck, and an outdoor arena hosting the coolest concept around; a silent disco where people dance to tunes directly transmitted to their headphones.

Come one, come all; Sickfest is finally here!

6. A fundraising extravaganza featuring some of the biggest mainstream names in the country

You know what’s awesome? Watching acts like Versatile Brass, Matthew James Borg, The New Victorians, Christabelle, Amber, Ivan Grech and many more all in one place.

You know what’s even more awesome? Watching them all for free.

And you know what’s even better still? Doing it all in aid of ALS Malta, and helping out with raising funds for a newer and bigger Dar Bjorn.

It’s the best of all worlds.

7. The island’s premier Doom Festival celebrates 10 years of heavy music and great vibes

Malta Doom Metal Festival has been going for an entire decade, and a number like that isn’t reached without a celebration.

Taking to the scene’s latest hangout, ?ebbu?’s The Garage, MDM will be organising a little get-together remembering all their previous editions, along with teasing some of the music of this year’s edition.

Entrance is free, and this is the perfect opportunity to build the hype for the 10th Malta Doom Metal Festival hitting the islands later this October, so don’t miss out.

Sunday 2nd September

8. The end of another season for Malta’s awesome morning parties

Maybe in-the-morning-sun is not the first thing that pops into your head when you think Sundays in summer, but that was before Sunny Side Up came around.

Like all great things, though, the cool concept is coming to an end as September rolls in. To commemorate another season of dancing early and downing healthy smoothies, SSU is returning for a Closing Summer Fiesta edition. Same place, same time, same vibe. One more time.

Tag someone who still needs to make plans for the weekend!
