The Astra Theatre in Gozo is all set for its next grand operatic production of Giuseppe Verdi’s Il Trovatore, featuring a star-studded international cast made up of some of the finest names in the business.

The Astra has always served as a platform to promote local and foreign talent and this time it will become the grounds for a four-act play by Verdi based on the 1836 play El Trovador.

Performing on the evenings will be several operatic sensations – including Valeriy Georgiev as the troubadour, Joana Parisi as Leonora, Plamen Dimotrov as the Count de Luna, Sania Anastasia as Azucena and Carlo Colombara as Ferrando.

The production will also feature some local – equally as talented! – artists such as Marvic Baldacchino as Ines, Noel Galea as Vecchio Zingara and Mario Portelli as the Messenger.

Of course, no opera is complete without an orchestra which is being entrusted to Astra’s newly appointed conduct, Dr John Galea, who will be leading the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra, Teatru Astra Opera Chorus and Coro Lirico Siciliano.

As much as music brings the show to life, the scenery also sets the tone for the play and the crew behind Astra has delivered on this front for years and years.

Astra’s grand sets and lighting have caught the attention of several local and foreign artistic directors in the past, notably its 2015 set, which was transported to Rimini, Italy for the same operatic production.

This year’s show promises to match, if not exceed, previous productions with a cast and crew that is made up of world-class acts and volunteers combining traditional operations themes with a touch of modernism.

Given its reputable history and successful track record, tickets for the Gozo opera are selling out fast, but you still have time to grab yours by visiting the Teatru Astra website here.
