Millions were glued to their TV sets watching the Eurovision Song Contest’s Grand Final this weekend, but while Michela was making Malta proud in Tel Aviv, another young Gozitan singer took to the stage for another European competition… and won first place!

Ruth Portelli was in Bulgaria for the Discovery International Pop Music Festival, where she won the Best Voice on behalf of Malta

“I can’t believe it!” Portelli said moments after her win. “It’s such an honour this prestigious competition, for me, and for my country, singing alongside some of the most incredible talent I’ve ever heard… I was, and still am absolutely overwhelmed by the reaction of the crowd in the hall for both songs… speechless really.”

Ruth performed two songs; a stunning rendition of Think Of Me from the Phantom of the Opera, and an original in Maltese, Determinata

Performed last year at the 2018 Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza, Determinata was composed by Mark Scicluna, with lyrics by Emil Calleja Bayliss.

Accompanied in Varna by her immediate family and manager-publicist Mar Calleja Bayliss, Ruth followed the footsteps of past Maltese representatives (and winners) like Olivia Lewis, Ludwig Galea, Janvil, Deborah C and Janice Mangion.

Ahead of the flight, Ruth wished the best of luck to the other Gozitan singer representing the islands in Europe, Michela Pace, telling her, “let’s make our country proud!”
