Fresh Off A Hot Summer Release, Gozitan DJ Micimago Is Already Making Waves

Don’t look now, but one of Malta’s hottest young DJs is kicking out some sick original music – and it’s all going down in Żebbug, Gozo.

Micimago (pronounced mik-ee-maa-gō) is a DJ and a producer from the sister island who is on the come up – and he’s already dropping some real summer heat with the release of his latest single, Place.

“I just love to create something that didn’t exist before,” Micimago told Lovin Malta. “I wish to reach a lot of people with my music and hopefully make an impact. And, watching people react to and sharing my music is just the best feeling ever.”

Micimago recently released Place, featuring Jolene Samhan & Shaun Axiaq

The melodic house track is perfect for summer chilling – but the track is more than just an important single for Micimago.

“Place is a song that describes me because it has lots of elements which I can relate to. I also spent a lot of time working on it and what surrounds it so there’s a lot of me in it,” he said.

“I was approached by Shaun Axiaq (the guitarist) who asked if we could do something together. I had been following what he was doing so I decided to give it a go. We met up and he played me an idea on the guitar and we recorded it. Then I tried to build something around it and the basic structure of the song was built,” he explains.

“We then ended up discarding the primary idea but the song wouldn’t have come together if it wasn’t for that”

“We then wanted some vocals on it and since Shaun works a lot with Jolene, we asked her if she would be interested. We met the three of us at my studio and we started to come up with some lyric ideas. Then Jolene took it home and wrote the whole lyrics to the song. We met on another day to record the vocals, and another day to record Shaun’s guitar and drums. And then a month of tweaking until we had the final version,” he beams.

Known for his production skills as well as his ear for music, Micimago nearly didn’t even get into music seriously

“What’s funny is that seven years ago, I didn’t listen to any type of music,” he laughs.

“I was that guy who forgets about a song two minutes after listening to it. But somehow I stumbled across a very basic music making software and I started getting into it. Then I started to look into other producers and I was hooked with the dance scene,” he said.

The Gozitan producer is currently working hard on his next few releases while keeping busy performing throughout the summer

“I have a residency with Sound Salon and G7 every Friday so you’ll surely find me there. And there are some other one-offs which I will announce on my page,” he says to fans who would like to catch him live.

“I just want to say thank you to everyone who is supporting me and listening to my music. I love making it, but watching people enjoy my music is what I live for. Stay tuned, because I feel like it’s just the beginning,” he ends.
