Jazz Hands At The Ready: This Franco-Maltese Jazz Group Is All Set To Launch Its Explosive Debut

Franco-Maltese jazz collaboration group Blue Tangerine are set to release their first album this summer and we can’t wait to see what they have in store for us.

Blue Tangerine formed part of an exchange programme organised by the Fringe Youth Jazz Orchestra initiative. The nine-piece band, consisting of five musicians from France (Vincent, Florent, Benoit, Philippe, Michel) and four from Malta (Dean, Joseph, Karl, Angela) met and played for the very first time at The Malta Jazz Fest back in 2016.

What started out as a collaborative effort between a group of passionate musicians turned out to be so much more.

Since their debut show, the Franco-Maltese supergroup have performed several shows in both France and Malta, including the Malta Jazz Fest in 2018 and a couple of sold-out shows earlier this year at Offbeat Music Bar, Valletta.

Directed by band leader Vincent Jacqz , Blue Tangerine can be classified as a ‘contemporary jazz’ act. However, further analysis would suggest that the group draws inspiration from a variety of different genres, most notably the rhythmic phrasing of 1950s Brazilian infused jazz.

You don’t need to be a jazz enthusiast to enjoy our music – our original compositions are influenced by different genre-bending styles,” vocalist Angela Vella Zarb tells Lovin Malta. “Our album features a range of textures, from celebratory Brazilian brass band ‘choros’ to more melancholy and sweet tunes with lyrics.”

Now, after months of hard work and sacrifice, Blue Tangerine are ready to release their self-titled debut album, along with an album launch party to celebrate.

The self-titled debut will launch over four nights (31st July – 3rd August) at the intimate setting of Valletta’s Offbeat. It was recorded and mixed by Guillaume Jay at Studio de Meudon/ Studios Ferber in France and was mastered by Raphaël Jonin at J RAPH i.n.g.

More information about the event can be found on the event’s Facebook page.

Tickets for the album launch can be bought online via Trackage Scheme (€10 or €20 with a CD) hereThere will also be a limited number of tickets at the door (€15, €20 with a CD), but we suggest you buy them online as they are selling out fast.

The band are also planning to share their musical knowledge and expertise by organising a masterclass, which they plan to announce in the upcoming days.
