Many know of the legendary heavy metal band King Diamond, but what a lot of people don’t know is that a Maltese artist has been touring with them for over 20 years now.

Jodi Cachia, a Philadelphia-based artist whose roots lie in Maltese origin, has been performing alongside King Diamond posing as ‘Grandma’ Diamond during the band’s live performances.

That’s right, King Diamond’s very own ‘Grandma’ is Maltese (kinda).

After stumbling across her Instagram, Lovin Malta reached out to confirm whether she was actually of Maltese descent.

‘Sure am! My dad’s parents came to the US as teenagers,’ Jodi confirmed online.

King Diamond is one of the biggest names in the world of heavy metal, known both for their distinct sound and theatrical performances that shot the band to fame in the 1980s. They’re currently on a gigantic US tour that will end on December 4th.

Their flair for the performing arts has meant that the band has put on a killer and notorious live show with elaborate stage designs and, most iconically, Jodi interacting and dancing alongside King Diamond in her role as Grandma Diamond.

The concept of a ‘Grandma’ Diamond originated with their 1988 release ‘Them’ – the first of two fictitious concept albums about King Diamond’s mentally ill grandma. Though the album was released in the late 1980s, it wasn’t until 1998 that Jodi landed the job as Grandma and she’s been a part of the band ever since.

While Jodi may be known primarily for her role in King Diamond, her work extends beyond the stage and into other artistic endeavors, including painting, drawing, sculpting and printmaking.

Birds of prey, especially crows, are a recurring subject matter in Jodi’s work, as well as the female form.

An artist, a metalhead and perhaps King Diamond’s closest confidant, Jodi Cachia is a total badass and the fact that she has Maltese origins makes her a million times cooler to us.

Now, all we have to do is convince Jodi to visit Malta… and to bring King Diamond with her!
