Mużika Mużika is on in a couple of weeks and we are making good on our promise to tell you a bit about each participant. If you missed our intro on the first four, you can catch up on it here.

And today’s spotlight is on Jason Scerri, Josef Tabone & Victoria Sciberras, MARA, and Drakard & Lisa Gauci.

Do what your heart desires

Jason Scerri will be participating with his song Ħares ’il Fuq which he wrote and composed himself.

For a long time, Jason has performed in the musical scene in Germany with roles in My Fair Lady, West Side Story, Cats, We Will Rock You, Mamma Mia, and Evita. In 2022 he took part in the iconic musical Il-Kbir Għadu Ġej.

Ħares ‘il Fuq is a conversation between Jason and his father, who is recounting his experiences and giving advice to his son. He tells him to never give up, to look at life with positivity, and to do what his heart desires.

Did you know that the first few songs Jason wrote were for his sister Debbie Scerri, which featured in her debut album Having You?

A duo’s faith intertwined

Josef and Victoria will be performing the song Hekk Kif Int written by Cliff Casha and composed by Cyprian Cassar.

This is not the first year for these contestants however it is the first time they will be competing as a duo.

In the first edition of Mużika Mużika Josef formed part of the group Avenue Sky, while Victoria entered the competition in the second edition as a solo artist. Josef is a tenor and hails from the musical scene. Victoria on the other hand has been competing in music competitions from a very young age and has participated in contests such as Junior Eurovision, San Remo Junior, The Entertainers Singing Challenge as well as X Factor Malta.

Hekk Kif Int is a pop ballad that celebrates diversity in a relationship. It is in fact that difference in individuals that triggers and encourages, in a more significant way, the love of the couple, and paradoxically, brings them closer to one another as one.

It is quite interesting how this duo’s fates are intertwined. In the past, when Victoria was just 12 years old and was competing in a festival for the very first time, Josef was sitting on the jury and was one of her judges. What do you make of that twist?

The good, the bad and the ugly… life goes on

MARA will be competing with their song Ir-Rota Tibqa’ Ddur, composed by Philip Vella and written by Emil Calleja Bayliss.

MARA are a bubbly group of five lovely ladies called Annabelle, Ruth, Maria, Rachel, and Alexia. MARA, has already graced the stage of Mużika Mużika last year and when asked about what made them sign up again this year, their reply was unanimous – “How could we not?”

Ir-Rota tibqa’ Ddur is about how life’s experiences teach us resilience that keeps us moving forward. Whether these life experiences are positive or challenging, we should always take what we can from them and keep going.

Life goes on and waits for no one and we should get up and live each day with courage. This message is beautifully communicated in a hymn that is bound to catch your attention.

The composer Philip Vella tells us that the idea behind the group MARA was       essentially his. “I was very satisfied with the result they achieved last year. This    year I wanted to come up with something completely different for this year’s edition while staying true to their musical characteristics. I am sure people will be eager to see what they have come up with this year,” he said.

Friendship after love?

Drakard & Lisa Gauci will be performing the song Jekk Mhux Int, composed by Cyprian Cassar to the lyrics of Emil Calleja Bayliss.

These two certainly need no introduction Drakard and Lisa have both been participating in music festivals from a very young age and have both made a name for themselves during their participation in X Factor Malta. For a while Drakard and Lisa were an item but although their romantic relationship did not progress their genuine friendship is seeing them through this incredible experience of Mużika Mużika.

Emil tells us “the song Jekk Mhux Int was specially written for Drakard and Lisa and is based on their story, which although it may not have unfolded exactly as they thought it would, the emotions they shared for each other were real and strong.”

This song talks about the magic of first love and how the couple feels it is impossible for there to be anything that surpasses the emotions they feel for each other, so much so that they believe that there can be no one else for them. We’re pretty sure that many can relate to the blinding effect of first love.

That’s it from us for today, stay tuned for more news about this year’s Mużika Mużika contestants in the coming days.
