Freddie Portelli has been a staple in Maltese music for as long as anyone can remember. His catchphrase, “Il-kbir għadu ġej” hasn’t changed in as long as he’s been on the scene, so when he released his latest single with it as the title, Malta’s rock and roll wigs flew.
Just in time for summer nights in Gianpula and the biographical musical to hit the stage, Gozitan DJ Micimago took Portelli’s single and injected a little bit of 21st century dance music into it, and boy does it work!
The original track is what happens when a 75-year-old wants to soundtrack a millennial’s Cash In The Attic and does it well. The remix is what happens when millennials need a song to request in Paceville that won’t embarrass the rest of the club. Think along the lines of the Macarena, but a pure, unadulterated bop that is sure to get everyone onto the dancefloor and into an attempt at the world’s longest conga line quicker than you can shout “Ejja!”

The track was released as a Micimago single and is set to feature in the musical of the same name
The Gozitan-native worked on the record in collaboration with Freddie himself and the producers of Il-Kbir Għadu Ġej.
“When I was asked to remix Freddie Portelli, I was a bit sceptical at first because it is something completely different than what I usually do,” Micimago said of the opportunity to work with Malta’s longest reigning king of rock. “But when I heard the song, I instantly knew where I was gonna take it and now I am very proud of the result.”
