LMA Performance Spotlight: The New Victorians – Malta’s Hottest Duo Act Are Bonded By Blood And Bound For Greatness

Article Featured Image

A shared passion and love for music isn’t the only force that has driven exciting Maltese duo act The New Victorians for all these years. Rather, their success comes from a very special bond, one shared between two sisters who have been inseparable since day one and who are in every sense of the word, soul mates.

If anything, The New Victorians never came to be; they were always there. Bonded by blood, Bettina and Philippa share a rare connection as sisters who also happen to be best friends, visionaries, creators and much, much more.

The New Victorians isn’t just another band – it’s a lifelong project that started long before it got its name and will continue long after it has hit the big leagues.

Music was a part of the girls’ lives since Day One. Older sister Bettina began her journey on the piano and eventually took her classical background with her to university, where she graduated with a B.A. Hons in Music.

Her younger sister, Philippa, followed a similar path, taking up another chord-based instrument – the guitar – before pursuing vocal training and then delving into the performing arts, even landing a spot as Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz Pantomime.

Equipped with a musical talent too big for the small island of Malta, the young girls set their horizons abroad.

In December 2011, the two sisters took their talents abroad and competed in the Alchemy Songwriting Competition in Arkansas, USA, where they outshined the competition and became youth division winners, winning the votes of a star-studded judging panel made up of American Idol Winner Kris Allen and Grammy Award-Winner David Hodge.

With the taste of success on their tongues, the two sisters naturally combined their talents together and shortly after formed what we know them as today, The New Victorians.

They combined their formal music education together with the world of electronic music to create a fresh and unique sound that manifested into their first EP Dustpile, which spilled over into their full-length release in 2015 Seeker Seeker.

Seeker Seeker was a massive success, with several songs hitting over 60k views on YouTube. But music alone wasn’t enough to keep the two sisters satisfied…

The dynamic duo took to the world of theater and in 2016 made their theatrical debut with MARA, which played to sold-out crowds at the Manoel Studio Theatre and even landed a spot at the Edinburgh Fringe this summer, thanks to it’s newly adapted all-female version.

They also fronted the musical direction for VII this summer, a theatrical re-imagination of the events of Sette Giugno, releasing their latest single to date Still Got Fight.

Although theatre occupied a good chunk of the girls’ time over the past couple of years, they still found enough time to release a concept EP in 2018 titled Silence; which proved to be a massive success, with Lie Liar topping local charts for six consecutive weeks.

Having built a resume in both the world of music and performing arts, The New Victorians are more than ready to take the stage at the Lovin Music Awards on October 19th.

The two sisters have also been nominated for an award for all of their hard work and have the chance to be crowned Best International Act.

The New Victorians also have a chance to win Best Performance Of The Night thanks to our telecom partners GO Music Wildcard.

So, if you haven’t done so already, grab your ticket now and join The New Victorians for a night of partying, dancing and celebrating at the Lovin Music Awards next week!
