Maltese Artist Claire Tonna Releases New Song Written While She Found Herself Paralysed From A Spinal Injury

Maltese artist Claire Tonna has just released a massive new tune after a long, long wait and found inspiration for the latest ditty while lying in bed paralysed with a spinal disorder that almost took away her golden voice.

Taking a different, slicker, musical direction than her previous offerings, Tonna described the song ‘Never Enough’ as being about co-dependence.

Codependency in a relationship is when each person involved is mentally, emotionally, physically, and/or spiritually reliant on the other.

Speaking to Lovin Malta, the queer diva explained how childhood traumas can lead you to accept toxic relationships in your adult life unless you get support and heal from the damage caused. She explained how it’s never too late to become a better and more assertive version of yourself.

“Certain dogmas and behaviours are implanted in us at a young age, which is something I’ve learned and am still learning to disrupt and create new ways of being.”

“I really just wrote the song to express and release closure within myself. I didn’t write it to comfort others but if it does in any way help people to love themselves fully without needing assurance from others, then I’m glad the song is out there”

“At the end of 2020, I was diagnosed with a broken disk in the collar of my spine and until I got operated on Valentine’s Day of 2021, I stayed awake for two months without sleep due to the excruciating nerve pain, spasms and also due to none of the medications working on me.”

“I had plenty of time to go mad and process what actually caused my spine to break. I went mad with pain, not sleeping, not even knowing what caused this. It was during COVID as well so I was totally isolated.”

“During this really hard time, I wrote songs and kept a journal to figure out at least some of its cause and sources and try to provide comfort by understanding how I got there.”

“I couldn’t walk or move after surgery. I couldn’t talk either and I was informed that my voice might not return. It was a big death to my being. Losing my voice was a fear I never imagined I could live with, let alone physical dependence.”

“It was a strong wake-up call to stand up for myself and change, heal from things that got me there in the first place. I wrote Never Enough during this time.”

“Basically I realised that apart from lifting an excessive physical and emotional weight in my life, I yielded a lot too, with yearning to fit in a society where I’m not the norm, to be accepted by my family, to be seen, to be loved.”

“I carried so much emotional responsibility that was not even mine, I realised that I gave way too much in order to be loved”;

“To try to tell myself I’m worthy of love, I unconsciously thought that another person’s love for me would prove that I’m worthy of love, but it doesn’t really work like that if inside your head you still think you’re not worthy.”

“I hope that ‘Never Enough’ can help people who are struggling to find self-love and acceptance. It’s important to know that no one can fix your past traumas and unlovedness except for yourself, and that seeking love and belonging from others will never be enough. You have to be responsible for yourself and learn to love yourself fully, no matter what others may think of you.”

“I feel now is time to sing such statements in a dance, for we ought to learn to not torment ourselves with suffering in healing but rather be able to trust it, see it, dance with it too rather than being scared of it.”

“The Other’s Love Is Never Enough”

The artist plans to continue making music that is honest and raw, and hopes to inspire others to do the same.
