Revisiting Genesis 30 Years Later: Maltese DJ Asked To Remix First Acid House Song Ever Recorded For Rare Vinyl Release

Dark clubs, bright yellow smileys and the thumping beat of a 303. Acid house has been an underground dance music staple for over three decades… and now, the genre’s first song ever is getting a rebirth thanks to one Maltese DJ.

Anyone who’s ever danced to an acid house track in Malta has probably already heard of Acidulant. Plane-flying Neil Hales by day and acid-spitting wizard by night, Acidulant has a long list of accomplishments under his belt, but his upcoming project is easily his biggest one yet.

Along with some of the genre’s greatest artists from all around the world, Acidulant was asked to remix Phuture’s Acid Track… the first acid house song ever produced, released all the way back in 1987

“This is definitely the biggest thing I’ve ever been a part of in the music scene,” a beaming Neil tells Lovin Malta.

The project goes back quite a while, with Neil explaining how Afro Acid Plastik, the brainchild of US-based DJ Pierre, had actually reached out to him with the proposition last year.

Neil, a self-confessed “acid freak”, added his own spin to the classic track, inserting a healthy dose of whistles, splashing pads and tight toms perfectly reminiscent of a 90s rave.

In fact, here’s a preview of what to expect from the Maltese DJ’s remix…

Acidulant’s remix of the now-32-year-old classic joins the likes’ of Chicago legend K’ Alexi Shelby and UK acid experts Posthuman for a five-track, limited edition release.

In fact, only 500 copies of the Acid Track remix vinyl will be pressed, with a current estimated delivery date placing it squarely in January 2020. To make this release even more special, half of those 500 copies have already been accounted for at the time of writing!

And yes; those remaining 250 copies will need to be shared among all the vinyl shops of the world and the DJs themselves; so expect this to be an extremely limited run.

This marks the third remix release of its kind, with previous editions featuring remixes of the classic by other industry heavyweights such as Carl Cox and Kink. But you should already know which white-and-red-tinged edition we’re rooting for!
