A new musical project, fronted by local musician Nadine Axisa, is looking to take some of Malta’s classic hits and revamp them in a contemporary setting, to incite both a sense of nostalgia and freshness to some of our favourite local tunes.
Il-Ħoss tal-Għabex isn’t just another cover album, though. The album will consist of a number of songs carefully chosen to form the basis for an artistic journey that involved experimentation from all perspectives.
The album draws its inspiration from a multitude of sources…
‘Il-Ħoss’ (meaning ‘sound’) represents the musical element, which in this case is the contemporary and experimental sound of this album.
‘Għadex’ (meaning ‘twilight’) is the light that is present after sunset and before sunrise. The change that twilight brings with it is symbolic of how these Maltese classics are being presented in a new light.
Oh, and when I say they’re getting a ‘contemporary’ makeover, I actually mean they’ll be reworked into contemporary jazz pieces…
Nadine has put her unique twist to some of Malta’s most cherished songs, not only to have a bit of fun with them but also to inject some fresh sounds into the local jazz scene.
Just check out how she’s reworked these classics in her upcoming album…
For this project, Nadine teamed up with some of the best in Malta, including local jazz musician Joe Debono and Temple’s very own David Vella, which can only mean it will be top-notch quality material.
Il-Ħoss tal-Għabex will be unveiled on two special nights at the Valletta Campus Theatre this Saturday and Sunday, with Nadine giving a live performance of her reworked material.
The album itself will be available in the form of a CD and 12″ vinyl (which also includes a download link).
