The Ultimate Playlist For Every Maltese Christmas Party
With there only being a few days left until 25th December, we’re pretty sure you’ve been hearing quite a lot of Christmas songs, but we’re willing to bet that most of them are the same old carols that everyone is by now is ready to get a break from.
So here’s a list that includes old, new, Maltese and international songs – with something for everyone this Christmas:
1. John Lennon – So This Is Christmas
Christmas Day Lunch is approaching, and if you’re heading over to your grandma’s to help with the preparations, this is definitely going to be playing on her old cassette tape player that’s somehow still working. And we’re not complaining.
2. Ninu Ninu Tal-Milied
A highlight of every Christmas school concert. Let’s be honest; we all zoned out during a couple of verses where each and every student in our class would come out of the single-file to sing a couple of lines. But then it’s back to everyone passionately shouting NIIINU NIIINU TAL-MILIIIED…because it meant we were one verse closer to Christmas.
3. O Lejl ta’ Skiet
When you think about it, Malta’s very own Silent Night is actually pretty sweet. We’re feeling cosier just thinking about this and a cup of mulled wine after midnight mass.
4. Band Aid – Do They Know It’s Christmas
Don’t give us any of that 2014 cover BS. The original 1984 is the only version worth listening to. And take this time to actually watch the video closely, because 2017 is apparently going to be all about the 80s.
5. Xarabank 2011 – Milied Ta’ Tama
Malta’s answer to Band Aid? Music by Philip Vella, lyrics by Peppi Azzopardi. #dreamteam
6. David Azzopardi – Bambin Iswed
A classic Maltese Christmas song. Definitely deserves to be on the list, not only because of its part of Maltese culture since its release in the 70s, but also because of how relevant it’s remained.
7. Michael Bublé – Santa Baby
Err sorry, Santa *Buddy.
You can’t really have a Christmas without the Bubs, even if you’re in mildly cold Malta and not white New York. “Santa baby, slip a Rolex under the tree for me, I’ve been an awful good guy.” The greatest musical “no homo bro” of all time.
8. X-Tend – Christmas Father
One of the classics. We dare you to watch this without shouting “IT’S FATHER CHRISTMAS!!” every couple of seconds. The song’s video has more than 100,000 views on YouTube, so that’s a lot of shouting.
9. The Crowns – Do I Like You More In Christmas?
Fast forward to 2015, and here’s another local original for the festive season.
10. Ħelu Bambin
Ever wondered what Chiara and Ludwig harmonizing sounds like? Well, here you go. You’re welcome… we think.
11. Ninni La Tibkix Izjed
Klessik oħra. Another one of those songs that was very much like the Ninu Ninu tal-Milied experience at school. Maybe it has something to do with all the Ninis in the titles…
12. Joe Demicoli – Santa Klaws Mhux Riesaq Lil Hawn
It was inevitable that Malta’s very own Weird Al was going to have a parody Christmas carol, and parts of this are actually pretty funny. “Biex jillandja jrid il-lixx, mhux jitkaħħal ma’ aerial jew dish.” Fair play, Demicoli. If you like this song, check out his Last Christmas parody.
13. Spinesplitter Studio – Carol Of The Bells
If nothing on this list has quite hit the spot yet, try this. One of Malta’s most prolific (and quite metal) recording studio’s take on the classic a capella carol. Not for the faint of heart, but kicks all type of ass.
14. Shakin’ Stevens – Merry Christmas Everyone
THIS FUCKING SONG AGAIN. We’ve already mentioned how this tune is one of those unavoidable things this time of the year, so of course we were going to include it in our playlist. By the way, we need to talk about that video guys.
BONUS: Mariah Carey – All I Want For Christmas Is You
Because it’s impossible not to dance and sing to this one, no matter the grinch factor. Merry Christmas everyone!
