Turn It Down! Maltese Clubs May Have To Close At 1AM Under New Noise Regulations
Clubs in certain parts of Malta’s most popular entertainment areas may have to lower the music or face shutting down if the sound they are emitting is loud enough to be heard outside of the premises.
A new schedule just added to the Trading Licenses Act looks to curb noise pollution stemming from nine specific streets in Paceville, Qawra and Bugibba. Under the new policy, if music can be heard outside of clubs after 1am, the club will have to shut the music off – even if it is licensed to play music until 4am.
The areas in question are:
Qawra/Bugibba
- Triq it-Trunċiera
- Dawret il-Gżejjer
- Triq il-Bajja Pedestrian Zone
- Part of Triq San Antnin,
- Part Triq il-Pijunieri to Triq il-Ħallel
- Part of Triq il-Ħallel to Triq iċ-Ċerna
- Part of Triq il-Qawra from Triq l-Istamar to Triq it-Trunċiera.
Paceville
- Trejqet Dragunara
- Triq il-Ġdida to Triq Santu Wistin
These new regulations affect some of Paceville’s busiest bars and clubs, including the main street heading to Bay Street and the ever popular Playground club.
The law extends to any ‘annoyance or inconvenience caused to neighbours’ which includes anyone hanging outside the premises as well as on the streets.
