Maltese musicians came together with six different African artists to produce a track focused on achieving unity across a multitude of cultures.

The song, Africa Unite, was produced by Aidan Somers, co-produced by William Ayi, who produced his own section, and Clayton Gauci, who created melodic phrases through his guitar playing, under AISO Records.

The song brought together six African artists: Emperor Goddy, Itz Manyi, Legen Ayi, SDB Okojie, Young G Kay, and Z16 Awelaga, who relate deeply within the song, as they sing words of praise to their homeland but acknowledge the wrongs and the challenges faced every day by the African community.

“Africa Unite is a cry whose purpose is to reach the ears and hearts of a worldwide audience – the message within is to be heard from as many people as possible so that those who listen can understand and empathize with the African people,” Clayton Gauci explained.

Through this collaborative creation, the artists give us a glimpse of their hardships and their dreams.

”This project was one of the most inspiring and wholesome ventures in my career so far. From what was an idea of introducing multiple African artists together became an anthem for unity across the regions,” Aidan Somers said.

”The concept was inspired by uniting various artists from five different countries in Africa, each country is represented with the ‘beat’ change in the tracks, each artist having a verse inspired by elements from their culture with the instrumental representing that change, with tempo changes, rhythmic and chord changes,” Somers continued.

“Personally, as a producer, this would be one of my largest ever projects, a first attempt at creating a medley combining various sounds and styles of afrobeat.”

“The production was produced by taking an influence from each of the various countries of the artist’s origin and creating a section in the instrumental representative of that music culture.”

Anyone listening will notice various sections forming around five different songs coming together in this afrobeat medley.

The phrase commonly repeated throughout the chorus is ‘Uwumyeye Bakun’ meaning ‘Let Us Be One’.

“The process of writing the song happened very smoothly and the concept came about organically, a conversation happened between the artists who have all had similar experiences facing struggles in their home countries.”

“The concept of the song was easily formed through the shared experiences faced by the artists and the continuous concern for their home country, the political situations, and various cultural differences and civil crisis.”
