Young Maltese singer and actor Beppe Caruana just took off to go to the Zecchino d’Oro finals.

Caruana is set to step onto the international stage after being officially named a finalist in the 68th edition of Zecchino d’Oro, the renowned Italian children’s music festival.

His achievement continues Malta’s longstanding legacy in the world’s longest-running children’s song competition.

Beppe, who is travelling to Bologna to prepare for the final show, will perform the original song “Toc Toc” (“Knock Knock” in English), which he will sing together with Italian co-performer Sofia Bianco. His selection followed a rigorous international application process coordinated by Public Broadcasting Services (PBS) in partnership with Arts Council Malta.

Describing the journey as both “very precious” and “amazing,” Beppe said he was thrilled to be chosen, noting that he felt “really, really happy and proud of myself” when he learned he had made the final round. Selected from thousands of applicants in Italy and abroad, he acknowledged the significance of being part of such a competitive process.

“It is an amazing experience to be part of this competition,” Beppe said. “I’m a bit nervous because I’m the only Maltese here and everyone is speaking Italian, but I still feel proud and confident. Malta has left its mark on this competition for 16 years, and I think I have a pretty good chance that I can win.”

Beppe is the only Maltese finalist in this year’s festival, carrying Malta’s flag in an event where the island has a distinguished history. Malta’s connection to Zecchino d’Oro dates back to 1962, when Raymond Debono won with the song “La Giacca Rotta.” Beppe now becomes part of the long line of Maltese children who have succeeded on this celebrated stage.

PBS and Arts Council Malta played a key role in enabling Maltese children to apply, reflecting national institutions’ commitment to supporting local artistic talent internationally.

The Zecchino d’Oro 2025 final will be broadcast live from the Antoniano di Bologna and will air on TVM on Sunday 30th November at 5.20pm.

First held in 1959, Zecchino d’Oro has been staged in Bologna since 1961 and broadcast on RAI 1, becoming one of Italy’s most cherished and enduring cultural traditions.

Good luck Beppe!
