WATCH: Brikkuni Win The LMA For Best Alternative Act… But Guess Who Didn’t Show Up And Left Us A Statement Instead?

Not usually two scenes that are seen under the same roof performing together, Malta’s pop and alternative scenes came together last Saturday for the first edition of the Lovin Music Awards. Well, most of them anyway.

The inaugural LMA for Best Alternative Act went to Brikkuni… but of course, Mario Vella and the rest of the clan weren’t present to accept the award.

So what do you when you’re an alternative god like Mario Vella but you’ve just won an award? Well, respectfully refuse the concept of award shows and send out a formal message about it all, of course.

What follows is exactly what you’d expect… ish.

Wait, isn't that Jon Mallia?

Wait, isn't that Jon Mallia?

Instead of Mario Vella, the LMA audience got treated to Kaxxaturi and No Bling Show’s very own Jon Mallia, who accepted the award on behalf of the band and passed on a message straight from the notorious frontman himself.

Including choice quotes like “our band ostensibly refuses to be pigeon-holed within a rigid musical aesthetic” and “artistic meritocracy should not suffer at the mercy of popularity”, the statement had anything you’d expect from a Mario Vella comment if you’ve read more than 10 seconds worth of Mario Vella comments.

And for anyone who was a bit lost after all those big words, Jon Mallia had the perfect translation.

“Mario Vella għala bieb żobbu minna lkoll.”

Cue raucous applause and a couple of very confused audience members, and you’ve got yourself the unmistakeable reaction that follows most Mario Vella comments. Mission accomplished… and award well-deserved!

Speaking of awards, the LMAs saw 20 different trophies being handed over a multitude of categories, ranging from Best International Success (that went to Emma Muscat) and our very own Lifetime Achievement Award… which of course went to Freddie Portelli.

Leading the awards pack, The Travellers managed to scoop four LMAs, included the coveted Best Performance of the Night Award. The second biggest winner of the night was Ira Losco, who won three awards: Best Solo Act, Best Pop Act and Best Collaboration for Hey Now with Owen Leuellen. The rapper from Valletta, who finished second on last year’s X Factor, also won the Best Upcoming Male award.

In the meantime, if you’re (somehow) still unsure why Brikkuni managed to so effortlessly nab the Best Alternative Act, here’s their latest track Aħfirli Missier Għax Ser Nerġa ahead of their highly-anticipated upcoming album to see you through the rest of the day.

Also, if you’d like to catch more of Jon Mallia and his no-holds-barred delivery, then stay tuned for the next episode of Kaxxaturi, coming soon enough.
