Maltese drummer Daniel Said is currently killing it in the international music scene, with major gigs lined up for the rest of this year playing for international artists like Myles Smith and Tom Odell.

Said has been based in the UK for the last 13 years studying and practicing music and his career massively taking off this year, forming part of Myles Smith’s band.

“I started playing for Myles Smith last year, when we supported Amber Run on their UK and European tour. I got the gig through his guitar player who I became very close friends with at our postgraduate level studies,” Said told Lovin Malta.

Even though his career has recently blown up, playing for Myles Smith wasn’t his first major gig. Said played for Kate Stewart who he studied with during his undergraduate at Tech Music School in London, now known as BIMM Institute. He then went on to get a Master’s degree at ICMP London where he impressively graduated with the highest award of the course.

Said has also played for James Woodrow, a renowned classical artist, in his jazz trio. Woodrow is considered one of the UK’s leading contemporary classical and electric guitarists.

Besides this, Said was also active in the Maltese metal scene in the first couple of years living away. He’s toured and gigged with Beheaded on many occasions and also played in a Maltese band called Freddie for a few years.

Clearly, becoming a professional musician has always been a dream for the 32-year-old drummer, and that’s exactly what he’s done. But, even though this is his full-time job, he explained that the bond he has with the band makes it all super special.

“We are ultimately all close friends which makes it a lot more special than a ‘session’ job so to speak.”

These are just some of the incredible gigs that Said has lined up for this summer in Europe and beyond:

Glastonbury Festival in Somerset on 29th June
Latitude Festival in Suffolk 27th July
Supporting Tom Odell on 19th July
Pori Jazz Festival in Finland on 20th July
Grand West Arena in Cape Town on 22nd August
Parklife in Johannesburg on 28th August

“This is just the beginning.”
