Majestic cliffs, dramatic backdrops, endless seascapes and beautiful scenery. Malta has many beautiful locations which make the perfect background for any music video, and Fomm ir-Riħ has it all.

Leonardo Barilaro, musician and aerospace engineer, truly appreciates the Maltese scenery. He regularly features Maltese places in his music videos and this time was no exception.

The video was shot in the picturesque Fomm ir-Riħ in Gozo and features talented Bulgarian dancers Viktoria Petkova and Teodor Yankov. Part of his future album SeaSharp (a collection of songs which seem to channel the spirit of the sea through their sounds), the track is the perfect soundtrack for the scenery.

“I really love the sea,” Leonardo told Lovin Malta. “It is one of the reasons why I am in Malta, the Sea appears in my music, I enjoy it with free-diving and I also love to do underwater photography. It feels like I have a deep connection with the sea.”

Leonardo regularly shares videos of his performances. He fuses sea, synthesisers and his grand piano regularly in all of his performances. Leonardo has been steadily working on experimental projects.

“I have a hybrid background, I am both a professional musician and an aerospace engineer,” Leonardo told Lovin Malta. “This is merged with my passion for free-diving, photography, and Chinese martial art.”

The title of the song, Alabora, means sinking in Turkish, and can be interpreted for both a sinking ship or in a more metaphorical manner. The composition starts off with a very meditative and soothing sound, evolving to a more intimate and soulful piece, finishing off with sound which simulates the rising feeling one gets when emerging from the sea.

“For the ‘Alabora’ video I was looking for a breathtaking view in the wilderness, luckily Malta has plenty of those. One of the things which I really liked about the place is that there was nobody there, no boats, no buildings, nothing,” Barilaro said.

When Leonardo went location scouting, he instantly thought that Fomm ir-Riħ was perfect.

“I really wanted the dancers and myself to be alone in the wilderness and in close contact with the sea,” he said.
