WATCH: Malta’s Premier Beatboxer Dana McKeon Represents In The Berlin World Championships
If you didn’t already know, there’s a female Maltese beatboxer getting busy boxing beats all over the place. Dana McKeon has been creating music with just her mouth for years now, even getting spotted by people like Bruno Mars for her talents, and now she will be representing Malta at the Beatbox Battle World Championship.
The Championship starts at 2:30pm today, and Dana will be competing in the Women’s Elimination Rounds between 22:40 and 23:40 tonight, which you can stream live in the video above.
The World Championships take place every three years, and Dana reached the quarter-finals in 2012, where she impressed the crowd. But this year, she wants to go much further.
Speaking to Lovin Malta from Berlin, the Maltese beatboxer was “super hyped” for her showcase, ready to bring her unique style to the stage, but was aware of the pressure that comes with her position.
“It can be intimidating being the only Maltese person in the Beatbox Battle community, but it’s such an honour to put our country on the map. Tonight’s elimination round will be a series of two minute showcases from every participant so it’s going to be a high-energy event for sure. I’m going to stay true to my melodic style and try to bring something different to the table, so let’s hope the crowd and judges dig it!” she said.
If she does well today, she heads to tomorrow’s Battle Round
“I had made it to the Battle Rounds the first time I took part in 2012 – it takes the energy to a whole new level,” she said.
The Maltese hip hop scene will be watching and supporting from the island as Dana battles her way through some of the best female beatboxers in the world.
