He is best known for his several attempts to represent Malta at the Eurovision Song Contest, but Klinsmann Coleiro ventured into pastures new last night – competing in the final of a popular Russian singing competition.

Klinsmann was one of 15 singers from around the world who qualified to the final of the New Wave contest in Sochi, making him the first Maltese singer to make it that far since the pop music competition started back in 2002.

He performed the late Avicii’s popular summer anthem ‘Wake Me Up’ and delivered a typically lively performance, strumming on his guitar before dancing out the last bit of the song.

As per the format of New Wave, Klinsmann’s performance was given points by a panel of ten judges and the Maltese singer ended up finishing in 12th place. The contest was won by Russian singer Dan Rozin, with fellow Russian singer Darya Antonyuk coming second and Armenia’s Gevorg Harutyunyan finishing third.
