X Factor Malta took another turn for the emotional last night when a young singer opened up about how she had been rejected at another singing competition because of her physical appearance.

Nicole Borg, 20, confirmed right before her audition that she had participated in an unnamed singing competition two years ago but was rejected because of her figure.

The awful experience clearly took its toll on her.

“I didn’t leave my house for a year, not even to work or to buy the groceries,” she said. “I just stayed singing at home and I gained a lot of weight. I’m here today though, and I hope I won’t be judged on my appearance this time.”

After the judges assured her that this won’t be the case, Nicole belted out a powerful rendition of Radiohead’s Creep that earned her a round of applause from all four judges.

All four judges were left impressed by Nicole’s audition

“If everyone who came here sang with as much emotion and heart you, and if they wanted this as badly as you…” Ira said, but stopped mid-sentence after she realised Nicole had started crying.

The popular singer then got off her chair to hug Nicole and give her some advice.

“You have pain inside you that shouldn’t be there,” she said. “It’s people without heart who don’t stand a chance in the music industry, but you do stand a chance and you do have a right to be here.”

The other judges praised the singer’s audition too, with Howard Keith Debono describing it as “exceptional” and Alex Alden saying it was “humbling to experience that immensity.”

Ray Mercieca said the lyrics of ‘Creep’ don’t apply for her, because “You do belong her, big time”.

Nicole earned four yeses and will progress to the bootcamp stage of the competition, which will start airing onTVMnext week.
