There’s a select number of Maltese bands that we see performing all over the island.  There are even some that have achieved international success and have travelled the world playing their music. But do we actually know who’s the biggest Maltese band out there when it comes to online following?

Thanks to social media (more specifically, Facebook page likes) we’ve been able to answer that question, and it’s probably not who you expected…

According to Facebook, Malta’s most ‘liked’ band is metal group Beheaded, with a staggering total of 189k likes

And who’s the second most liked band on Facebook? None other than fellow metalheads Abysmal Torment… with a total of 125k likes

Yes, Malta’s most popular bands are a pair of death metal acts. But is it all that surprising?

Beheaded and Abysmal Torment have been active in the music scene for decades, building a résumé and international network for themselves that totally justifies all the likes they’ve got.

Both bands are considered the forefathers of extreme music in Malta, with Beheaded’s demo tape ‘Souldead’ being the first death metal studio recording released by a Maltese band.

They both have an international audience and have performed at major metal festivals including Party San Metal Open Air and Incineration Fest.

They’ve released some influential records and have even signed with US labels Unique Leaders and Willowtip.

And their albums have had some stellar reviews by international music magazines Kerrang, Terrorizer and have been reviewed by famous Youtuber GALACTICRIMINAL.

And after all these years, both bands are still very active today, which clearly shows the success their respective fanbases have brought them

Abysmal Torment released their fifth album The Misanthrope last year and Beheaded released their sixth album Only Death Can Save You a month ago, and have got a European summer tour coming up next month.

Other notable (and perhaps more “expected”) bands that feature on Malta’s popularity list weere Winter Moods, Red Electrick, Tribali, Airport Impressions and The Travellers who all have impressive Facebook followings ranging from 25,000 to 45,000.

Tag a local band that you think is underrated and deserves way more Facebook likes!
