Wonder Women: If You’re Looking For Some New Tunes, This Female-Powered Maltese Playlist Has Got You Covered

If you feel like you’ve been listening to the same ten tracks on repeat for the past month and need some audio-inspiration, this playlist has got you covered.

The ladies over at Malta Sound Women Network have compiled a playlist of some original work by some local women in music. From Malta-grown artists to artists who have taken up residence on our tiny island, these gals sure know how to whip up a good track.

You can find the full playlist on their Soundcloud, but in the meantime, let’s take a look at the artists and songs included.

1. Dream Today by HeartsBeatingInTime

Rebecca Theuma (known to her friends as Uma) is the brains behind HeartsBeatingInTime. Her music brings together echoey vocals and layered synth sounds.

2. mewtafranka by ?olma Qattusa

Together with Antoine Vella, Martha Vassallo creates some dreamy looped and electronic tracks in our national language.

3. Validate Me by Princess Wonderful

Sam Vassallo describes her work as “DIY synth pop & crying”, and if that isn’t the most relatable thing you’ve ever heard, you’re wrong.

4. Karen by YEWS

If you are in any way interested in the local electronic scene, you need to know who YEWS (Yasmin Kuymizakis) is.

She’s the queen of the electro scene here in Malta, has been instrumental in passing on her production knowledge to numerous artists in the local alternative music scene, and is also a part of the Malta Sound Women Network (MSWN).

5. U Got Me by SUNTA

Sunta is an Electronic music DJ and producer who’s groovy beats are guaranteed to get the entire room jumping wherever she is.

6. Fantasia by Juliane Wolf

Currently based in Malta, Juliane Wolf started DJing with vinyl in 2008 and played in nearly every big city in Germany at clubs like Golden Gate or Suicide Circus in Berlin.

7. Kink Soundtrack by Jess Rymer

Jess is a British musician and composer who moved to Malta to read for an MMus at the University of Malta, remained here and has been gifting the local music scene with her talents ever since. She founded the MSWN and is a co-founder of ‘For Your Ears Only’.

8. Iansa by Yana Indiia

Yana is originally from Brazil, but is currently residing over on our sister island, Gozo.

Other than music, she is also a visual artist and activist within the fight for indigenous causes.

9. Experiment #3: The Moods by doryland

Dorina is currently living and working in Malta, but is actually from Trieste in Italy. Her work is based in experimental and melodic electronic music.
