‘Wonderful Piece Of Music History’: Legendary UK Label Gives Shout-Out To Malta’s Flagship Record Shop
Legendary UK label Defected Records has featured Malta’s very own D’Amato records, the oldest running record store in the world, on social media.
The independent house label gave a shout-out to D’Amato Records, which they called “a wonderful piece of music history” in preparation for the second edition of Defected Malta, which will take place in October 2023.

“D’Amato Records (@damatorecords) in Valletta, Malta, is considered to be the oldest record shop in the world. Established in 1885 by Giovanni D’Amato, the shop has remained a family-run business, now in the hands of Giovanni’s great-great grandson, Anthony D’Amato and his two cousins,” the label wrote.
“Impressively, this shop has remained open for almost all of its entirety. It was one of the only shops to survive severe bombing on the island of Malta during World War II. It was also one of the few shops allowed to remain open in order to boost local morale. The shop was forced to close its doors for the first time in 138 years during the pandemic in 2020.”
Defected is known for helping pave the way for house music in the UK, and remains a big player in the music industry since its inception in 1999. Their catalogue includes singles by Bob Sinclar, Peggy Gou, Kings of Tomorrow, Masters at Work and Inner City.
The label is set to host the second edition of its three-day music event on the islands called Defected Malta. Featuring more than 50 DJs, the festival includes outdoor club shows, pool parties, boat parties and even a castle party. The line-up is yet to be announced, so keep your eyes and eyes peeled.
