Malta’s Tallest Sunflower Grown In Floriana Community Garden

A sunflower standing at an astonishing 3.6 metres has officially set a new national record in Malta, and it’s all thanks to some love, compost, and community spirit.

The leafy giant was grown by Friends of the Earth Malta (FoEM) in their Floriana-based community space, The Giving Garden, which has been blooming since 2018.

The garden, built around a repurposed British-era building, is more than just a pretty patch of green, it’s a hub where people come together to learn how to grow herbs, crops, and indigenous plants using organic, nature-friendly methods.

“We are overjoyed,” said Michelangelo Galea, FoEM’s Community Garden and Environmental Facilities Coordinator. “This sunflower is a testament to what a few seeds, healthy soil, and community care can grow.”

“This is a remarkable milestone that reflects not only the hard work of our team but also the power of sustainable, locally driven gardening,” proving what FoEM is all about.

Their workshops, held during the cooler months, cover everything from permaculture and beekeeping to urban gardening. Locals and even company teams get involved, learning skills they can take home and grow from.

This sunflower success also ties into FoEM’s bigger mission around food, agriculture, and biodiversity. By showing what’s possible even in urban settings, they hope to spark more conversations around healthy, local food and the importance of pollinators.

As FoEM marks its 40th anniversary this year, it’s clear they’re still finding ways to reach new heights, quite literally. And if this sunflower is anything to go by, the future’s looking bright (and very, very tall).
