Rangers Intervene After Protected Pine Tree Was Damaged In Aħrax

Rangers had to intervene after a picnicker was seen damaging a protected pine tree in Aħrax.
During a routine patrol of the Aħrax woodlands where rangers aim to prevent wildfires, littering and any environmental crimes, an individual was spotted high up in a pine tree trying to break off a branch.
The rangers approached the offender and found out that he had climbed the tree with the intention of breaking the branch off to use it in a bonfire.
The individual was a minor but was instructed to break the branch off by an adult of the group. The rangers also made the group put out the illegal bonfire that was lit under the trees.
Since irreversible damage had been done to the tree, the Environmental & Resources Authority (ERA) was called on site to assess the damage and take necessary action against the individuals.
The group took full responsibility for the crime and were regretful of the happenings, and understood the negative impact they had.
The Malta Rangers took to facebook to remind the public that “as per Woodlands regulations (SL549.123), it’s illegal to damage any protected tree and even to affix anything to it.”
