The story behind a car crash near Tigne’ Point in Sliema where at least two drivers began to physically assault each other has finally emerged. Lovin Malta spoke to a Maltese man who was one of the first people on site after the car overturned who spoke on condition of anonymity.

“I was one of the first people on site after the car overturned. There were two people trying to help this elderly man that was still stuck inside the vehicle out, and soon after his two sons arrived in their private vehicles. They weren’t able to get him out as he was injured, so they went and got some tools from their vehicles and broke the windscreen of the car their father was trapped in,” he said.

They were then able to get the father out – but that’s when the trouble started

The insults can be heard at around the 0:48 mark

“As soon as they got him out, the construction truck driver in the orange shirt told the brothers ‘nirra? imutlek missierek’, and he said it more than once. Even if it was the elderly driver’s fault you should never say those words. Instead of helping him, the construction truck driver was angry because the 84-year-old father had hit his truck, even though he barely had any damage,” he said.

The son, who was shirtless at this point and had blood on his hands after the struggle to get his father out, “totally lost it” after he heard those words.

“As soon as he told him that phrase more than once one of the brothers went crazy, he totally lost it and he went running towards him and punched him together with his brother,” he said.

“The police were on site but he escaped them and went again for him – they wanted to kill him. Then the police and friends calmed him down, and eventually one of the brothers took him to hospital with his private vehicle,” he ended.

Incident 1 4

At around 9:40am on Saturday morning, a white Ford Transit Connect van driven by an 84-year-old man from Msida crashed into two parked motorcycles before hitting a large construction truck, causing it to flip over and hit another parked car, before coming to a rest on its side, said a police spokesperson. Police, a fire engine, and a medical team were called in when it was found that two people were trapped inside the overturned Ford Transit.

Traffic and congestion built up as authorities cleared up the debris, and police confirmed with Lovin Malta that no arrests had been made following the incident.
