11 Summer Foods That Will Instantly Hit All Maltese People Right In The Nostalgia

Hands up if you're slightly obsessively counting down the days to summer 2019. Because we sure are. The sand in all of our bodily crevices, the scorching sun, the over-crowded everywhere and the over-priced everything. Mmmmm, can't wait.
In honour of the soon-approaching heat-devil months, we thought we'd throw it back to all the summer foods we used to eat here in Malta growing up. I mean, we still eat them now. But when we were younger we had them prepared for us and didn't do any of the work, so it was different.
These are some of them.
1. Rice salad with sweet corn and tomatoes
It was always so cold. Like, I know rice salad is supposed to be cold, but it was alway soooo cold.
2. Pink sausages on the BBQ
A staple of all family barbecues and without a doubt the best sausages on the planet.
3. Ħobż biż-żejt
It doesn't get more Maltese than watching your nanna set up a ħobża station made of; slices of ftira, tomatoes cut in half, olive oil, olives, and salt and pepper.
4. Watermelon triangles
The candy of the fruit world. Super refreshing and if you try really hard you can pretend its a slice of pizza.
5. Pasta salad with a bit too much oil
Just like the rice salad, it was always a bit too cold. And a bit too oily. But it was the only thing mummy got with her to the beach so we had no choice.
6. Tuna salad with mayo
And kappar and tadam and żibeġ and beans and peppers and sweet corn and literally all the veg you can think of that you don't like but are forced to eat.
7. Chips from the kiosk
The treat of all treats. When you didn't bring food from home so you were allowed to go and buy something from the kiosk.
8. Fruit salad because now we're healthy
Now that its the summer and our bodies are on display more often than we'd like, our desserts have changed form cakes to fruit salad. But sometimes paired with ice cream for balance.
Fruit salad, but in frozen form. And in little paper cups, you know the ones I'm talking about. The perfect vehicle for brain freeze.
10. Xeba crisps and dips
And wine for the grown ups. This isn't so much a beach food, but rather a 'sitting on the parapett watching the sunset' food.
11. Panina bil-butir u perżut
For when there's literally nothing left in the fridge and you have to improvise. This could also be replaced with kunserva.
BONUS: Cooking pizza on the BBQ
Because in the summer, any excuse for using the BBQ goes.
