IN PHOTOS: Carnival In 1960s Malta Was A Stylish Extravaganza

Carnival was a hell of a time this year, with some very creative costumes, and some less creative ones.

But today’s Carnival is nothing compared to the Carnivals they had back in the day, as some recently unearthed photos by the Gabriel Caruana Foundation show.

With a funky artistic sense, and eye-catching use of different shapes and patterns, some of the designs from half a century ago make today’s costumes look plain lazy.

And the floats were no less impressive as well.

Just look at this giant dude ride this giant fish.

These are just some of the designs by Gabriel Caruana, ranging from the 1950s to the 1980s.

Here’s a photo of Gabriel himself enjoying il-Karnival ta’ Malta 1967.

More than anything, the style of each year’s Carnival reflects the thought of the country in that year. And clearly, Maltese intellectual thought in the 1950s and 1960s was not as bad as some would first think.
