The 8 Most Iconic Moments In Malta’s Eurovision History

Article Featured Image

It’s Eurovision night tonight, and even though Malta sadly did not make it to the grand final, we’re hoping you’re all still hugely excited for your screening plans.

But before we get to the big night, let’s look back at some of the most memorable snippets from our Eurovision past. Here’s a countdown of the most iconic.

8. Renato’s Tassels

There are so many things to love about Renato Micallef’s 1975 Eurovision hit Singing This Song – his energy, strong vocals, trumpet accompaniment. But nothing beats those foot-long tassels.

7. Claudette’s Salsa Moves

Whether or not you’re a fan of this song is irrelevant. Nobody saw those salsa moves coming – and they’ve stayed with us for nearly two decades. Woman was on faj-er!

Mini-Bonus: Maltese spoken interlude also deserves a cameo on this list.

6. Times Three Hot AF Outfits

When Spice Girls fashion meets a Eurovision number starring three fit AF female singers – it’s a big moment. The vocals and dancing on this one didn’t make as much of a splash – but it’s safe to say this was Malta’s sexiest Eurovision moment.

5. Julie & Ludwig’s Opera Outburst

The story of a dysfunctional relationship basically translated into a Disney song merits a place on the list in and of itself. But there’s no question that the blind-siding operetta moment is what’s etched into our memories.

4. Ira’s Bump Rub

Reviews were mixed for Ira’s homage to Harry-to-be at the end of her second run on the big stage. But there’s zero doubt that it’s the visual that has most stuck with us from last year’s performance.

3. Chiara’s Wink

Find us a person who wasn’t filled with bubbling emotion during Chiara’s first run at the Eurovision and we’ll call it a day. That confident final wink told everyone (who didn’t already know) to have no doubts that this diva would always deliver.

2. Mary’s Epically Long Note

Having made Eurovision history in 2014 for being the longest ever held note in the contest (13 seconds), this legendary moment is fully deserving of second place on this list. We also give kudos to that spectacular ombre dress, and all of Mary’s amazing vocal sass.

1. Ira’s Glitter Bomb

When it comes to iconic Maltese Eurovision moments there simply is no parallel to Ira’s white-catsuit-clad, glitter-blowing moment. Executed seamlessly – it’s a moment of joy that no Eurovision fan will ever forget.
