Oh Wow: We’re Totally Fine With Not Using Our Cars As Long As Our Journey Is Simplified By An App

Would you ever consider not using your car? Ever? If your answer was yes or meh, you’re not alone.

Turns out that the majority of Maltese drivers are totally chill with not using their car — but only if they had an app which simplified their trips.

The Project Aegle Foundation — those guys who are here to improve your mobility, have carried out a survey to see exactly how willing you are to give up your car.

They asked a number of people if they’d be willing to use an app which simplifies trips in Malta.

The suggested app would help people get more travelling options like public transport, car pooling and probably re-enacting the exodus.

Two-thirds of the respondents were totally into this app

Turns out that our biggest fear is traffic congestion guys. The results are not as surprising, but they’re really something to ponder upon next time you’re stuck in traffic.

Of the 150 respondents, 84.46% are car users and their biggest concern is traffic congestion

40% of the users said they would dig this app if it included route planning, car pooling and information on public transport

This suggest that most people use their cars because they’re unaware of better alternatives. Some of them just don’t want to use busses because they seem unreliable and complex AF.

So technically y’all use your cars because it’s easier than getting the hang of public transport. But you still find traffic mentally and emotionally crippling.

Another 60% would use the app to improve their car journey by route planning, avoiding roads with traffic and sites of accidents

58.9% of these people were open to the idea of car pooling with their buddies

While 65% of 25 to 34 year olds would definitely use this imaginary app, 55 to 64 year olds would rather stick to their car.

“Given the high rate and increasing use of cars in Malta it is very good to see that people are starting to take alternatives into consideration. Having an app in place that enables you to plan your trip much better would greatly improve Malta’s traffic situation.” Nicoletta Moss, Manager of Project Aegle, said.

“It’s evident that an increasing proportion of car-drivers want more choice—but the only real choice is an informed one. As for those who don’t see themselves using the app, we should not jump to conclusions about their reasons,” Ranier Fsadni, an anthropologist and contributor to Project Aegle said.

“What’s important is to develop an approach to mobility that recognises the particular needs of different age groups so that they can all have a wider choice.” He said.

The survey took place between the 1st and 25th of June. A total of 150 valid respondents answered questions related to the introduction of a mobility app.

Traffic congestion and parking problems are today linked to massive costs for the Maltese economy, healthcare, and well-being. Project Aegle is here to advance the quality of life in Malta through improved mobility.
