People Are Worried About This ‘Giant Crack’ Over Popeye Village
A photo which was uploaded to Facebook yesterday seems to show a huge fissure along the cliffs in Mellieħa. The person who uploaded the photo drew comparisons with previous cases of large chunks which eventually disappeared, like one in Comino and another in the area of l-Aħrax. “The difference is that those two fell into the sea. This is right above Popeye Village,” he said, urging people to be vigilant.
The post got over 150 shares in just a few hours, with loads of people recounting their own experiences about spotting the crack, estimating how long it must’ve been there. One person said it had been there since she was a little girl, with other people assuring others that there was nothing to worry about. Another person said it might’ve been caused all the way back in 1908 when a horrible earthquake had hit Messina, causing a tsunami to cross from Għadira to this area, carrying with it hefty amounts of soil, rubble walls and all sorts of debris.
At one point or another, of course, it was inevitable that someone was going to mention the recent crumbling of Gozo’s iconic Azure Window. “Look what happened with Dwejra’s window,” one person said. “This might take time to collapse, but that doesn’t mean it won’t. The Azure Window was given another six years, and look at it now.”
Moreover, there seems to be a visible difference in the crack’s size when you look at the Google Street View photo (captured last November) and the one shared on Facebook (presumably taken sometime this week). When you look at the whole area on Google Earth, the potential collapse doesn’t seem too far-fetched, with the entire peninsula showing clear signs of heavy erosion.
