A First In Maltese Waters: Bigfin Reef Squid Spotted

Article Featured Image

A significant marine discovery has been made in Maltese waters with the first confirmed sighting of the tropical bigfin reef squid (Sepioteuthis lessoniana).

This species, native to the Indian and Pacific Oceans, was observed by marine biologist Alan Deidun and the Spot the Alien citizen science campaign. The sighting underscores the ongoing spread of non-native marine species in the Mediterranean region.

The bigfin reef squid was first recorded in the Mediterranean in 2002 off the coast of Turkey. Its appearance in Malta marks a significant extension of its range in the Mediterranean Sea. Deidun expressed gratitude to local fishers, such as Matthew Gatt, for reporting their observations, and thanked the Mediterranean Diving Project Initiative (MDPI) for supporting the research.

This discovery highlights the importance of citizen science initiatives in monitoring and documenting marine biodiversity. The presence of the bigfin reef squid in Maltese waters adds to the growing list of non-native species in the Mediterranean, raising questions about the ecological impacts and the factors driving these species’ spread.

As marine ecosystems continue to change, the role of local communities in observing and reporting unusual sightings becomes increasingly vital. Collaborations between scientists, local fishers, and citizen science campaigns are essential in understanding and managing the dynamics of marine biodiversity in the Mediterranean.
