Love Island Malta Season 3 contestant Nazan is under scrutiny after sharing a photo of herself handling a juvenile Shortfin Mako shark, a species classified as critically endangered in the Mediterranean.

The post showing Nazan clearly handling the endangered species captioned “Size matters” drew immense backlash by locals and relevant organisations.

Marine conservation group Sharklab Malta publicly identified the shark in a comment on the post, stating: “Just commenting to confirm that this is a juvenile Shortfin Mako — a critically endangered species in the Mediterranean at dire risk of extinction, and that it is protected according to several different laws, both locally and regionally. Handling or retention in Malta are strictly prohibited, and this has been passed to the relevant authorities.”

The group also shared their outrage via Instagram Stories, writing: “An infuriating sight to see. Shortfin Makos are critically endangered and VERY protected under Maltese law.”
