At A Ripe Old Age Of 23, Molly The Cat Is ‘Queen of Valley Road’

A 23-year-old blind cat named Molly has become something of a celebrity in Valley Road, Birkirkara.

Diana Tudorancea told Lovin Malta that she found Molly wandering around the streets in 2020, picked her up and took her to the Blue Cross vet clinic.

The staff at the clinic recognised the cat immediately, and explained how she had become a mascot for the clinic and the nearby Coach & Horses pub for over 20 years where she is affectionately known as the “Queen of Valley Road”.

“I have to appreciate Malta’s street cat culture, because every single stray I see here is cared for and loved – proof that this furball was around since before 9/11 and probably mothered entire colonies on Valley Road,” Diana said.

“The day after I found her I took her to Blue Cross where they told me that she’d been kept by them safe and told me her age. When I found out that she was already 20 years old, I realized that she wouldn’t be adoptable anymore, and basically had to go from love at first sight to come to terms with the fact that she is not going to be with us forever.”

“But she cheated everyone’s expectations because she’s now 23 and going strong. she’s a joy to be around. She’s there to care for you when you’re ill, she comes and inspects everyone around her despite being blind, and is very loving with people.”

Diana urged more people to adopt and take care of senior cats.

“Older pets are a gift because they are so very docile, and they have so much more love to give,” she said.

“Molly is very much oriented towards the people she lives. She is not much more difficult to care for than a younger pet but she does have special dietary needs, and has to take blood pressure meds, liver and kidney meds. My heart breaks for the many kitties and doggies in their golden years who really have so much to give. I can’t imagine these past years without her caring presence.”
