‘Boat Owners, Be Careful’: Turtle Dies After Propeller Strike Near St Paul’s Islands

A sea turtle has died after being struck in the head by a boat propeller near St Paul’s Islands, prompting an urgent appeal from the Wildlife Rescue Team Malta for boat owners to stay vigilant while out at sea.
The Wildlife Rescue Team received a call earlier today from individuals on a boat who had spotted the injured turtle in the water. The team immediately alerted the Environment & Resources Authority (ERA), which coordinated with Civil Protection Malta to retrieve the animal.
The turtle was brought ashore and handed over to the rescue team. Sadly, the injury was severe.
“From the get-go, it was very obvious that the turtle was in a critical state due to a propeller hit to the head,” the team said.
A veterinarian determined that the propeller had cut through most of the turtle’s brain, and despite emergency efforts, the turtle passed away shortly after.
In light of the incident, the Wildlife Rescue Team is calling on boat owners to be extra cautious while out at sea.
“We understand this is the peak season for people to enjoy their crafts, however we need to also keep in mind that the sea is home to a number of marine life. Being also the peak time for nesting season, more turtles will be close to shore, so please keep them in mind.”
The organisation reminded the public that all rescued animals are protected species, and keeping them as pets is illegal in Malta. All their volunteers are properly trained and licensed to handle wildlife.

The team also thanked the public for their continued support, along with their veterinarians and dedicated volunteers. Donations to help their ongoing rescue and rehabilitation work can be made via bank transfer, Revolut, or BOV Mobile Pay using the details provided on their official page.
