Dog Owner Arrested After Aggressive Outburst Following Hedgehog Attack In Manoel Island

A hedgehog was killed after being mauled by a dog in Manoel Island, with the dog’s owner turning aggressive toward bystanders after being told to put his dog on a leash.
The hedgehog had been hiding in a shrub when the dog attacked. Under Maltese law (SL 549.44), hedgehogs are a protected species, and dogs must be supervised in public unless in designated off-leash areas.
When people asked the owner to leash his dog, he reportedly became aggressive throwing large rocks, swore, and even exposed himself, threatening anyone who called the police. Concerned witnesses contacted the Malta Ranger Unit, who guided them on the proper reporting procedure.
Thanks to the quick response of the Gżira Police, the man was located and taken to the station. The Malta Ranger Unit confirmed he now faces multiple charges, and an investigation into the dog’s welfare is ongoing.
The unit also praised the bystanders and enforcement officers, saying, “When NGOs, the community, and enforcement work hand in hand, we create a better and safer community.”
