An important initiative has been reinvigorated! The national campaign for neutering cats has been relaunched, with a significant investment of €200,000 per year.

This vital campaign is aimed at addressing the issue of stray cats on our streets, with the goal of neutering approximately 5000 cats annually.

Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries, and Animal Rights, Anton Refalo, along with Parliamentary Secretary for Fisheries, Aquaculture, and Animal Rights, Alicia Bugeja Said, announced this initiative during a press conference, underscoring its importance in providing care for our feline companions.

Experienced trappers will be mobilised to ensure these cats receive necessary medical attention before and after their neutering treatments. Following treatment, the cats will be safely returned to their habitats.

Minister Anton Refalo highlighted the government’s ongoing commitment to animal welfare, citing this campaign as another significant measure from the Budget. He also acknowledged other initiatives, such as the voucher scheme, which has already facilitated the sterilisation of over a thousand cats this year through collaboration with feeders and volunteers.

Parliamentary Secretary Alicia Bugeja Said emphasised that this investment will facilitate more coordinated efforts, ultimately leading to better management of the cat population on our streets. Moreover, she noted that reducing the spread of infectious diseases among cats benefits both the felines and the community at large.
