Għadira Bay Turtle Nest Yields 22 Hatchlings According To Excavation Reports

Volunteers have inspected nest two at Għadira bay and through excavations, it was discovered that the nest contained a total of 104 eggs.
“Following the start of the hatching three nights ago, an excavation took place today to determine why few hatchlings were produced by the nest. Upon examination of the 104 eggs within the nest it resulted that the vast majority of them were unfertilised and thus could not develop,” wrote the Environment & Resources Authority(ERA) on social media.
Out of the 104 eggs, 69 were not fertilised 13 were fertilised but stopped developing in the initial stages, and the remaining 22 hatched successfully.
For the time being, one of the hatchlings is being assessed by vets to determine whether it needs additional care. From the total nest, there was a 21% hatch rate and out of the fertilised eggs, 63% hatched.
