‘Give Her Space’: Turtle Struggling To Nest In Gozo Raises Privacy Alarm

A turtle was found struggling to nest in Ħondoq ir-Rummien in Gozo, Wildlife Rescue Team Malta said prior to warning the public to give the turtle space and keep silent.

The rescue team posted the somewhat heartbreaking yet wholesome story on Facebook where they explained that they received a call from the Environment and Resources Authority (ERA) early this morning.

“Officials from both ERA and Nature Trust went on site, and found the turtle still trying to attempt to nest.”

“All the attempts were unsuccessful unfortunately. Therefore, we’ll be expecting this mama to come again to nest in the coming nights,” they continued.

The turtle gave up and made her way back to the sea, in the meantime she was microchipped in order to increase the relevant data in the Mediterranean and help rescue teams recognise her on any repeat encounters.

“Give the turtle space and keep silent so as not to disturb her.”

This is not the first turtle-related news Malta has seen this week. Yesterday, the first nest 2022 was spotted in Gozo’s Ramla l-Ħamra by a volunteer of the same rescue team that handled today’s situation.

If you ever spot a turtle nesting on the beach be sure to call the rescue team on 9999505 or ERA.

Have you seen any turtles trying to nest this summer?
