Il- Pixxifjamma: Maltese Diver Spots Rare Ribbon Fish In Local Waters

Freediver and videographer @malta_ginger_mermaid took to social media to express her astonishment towards coming across a Mediterranean ribbon fish.

Also known as the “Fjamma”, “Pixxifjamma” or “Żigarella”,  the fish is a deep-sea inhabitant, and a rare sighting to humans. In fact, it is almost never seen close to the coast.

The diver initially thought the fish was a piece of plastic from a distance and swam towards it to collect it. The dealfish also appeared injured, stated the diver, probably the result of the rough waters.

“These moments are indelibly etched into my memory, compelling me to capture them through my camera lens, preserving their significance for a lifetime and enabling me to share with others who, like me, marvel at the wonders of our oceanic world,” she said.

The fish then surfaced and disappeared from her sight, into Wied il-Għasri’s depths.
