Let The Dolphins Out Of The Tanks: Parliamentary Petition Tops 900 Signatures

A parliamentary petition calling for an end to the practice of keeping dolphins in tanks in Malta is steadily gaining traction, reaching over 900 signatures.
This follows growing public outrage over the conditions in which dolphins are kept at Mediterraneo Marine Park. Footage filmed by Eva Galea Sammut on 16th June shows dolphins swimming in tight circles inside a small, murky tank with barely enough room to move. Hers is one of many campaigns urging to authorities to relocate the dolphins to a coastal sanctuary
Galea Sammut had launched a change.org petition that quickly gathered over 7,000 signatures. However, since it’s not an official parliamentary petition, there is no obligation for authorities to act on it. In response, another concerned citizen – Marco Montebello – initiated a formal parliamentary petition urging Malta to ban dolphin captivity once and for all.
The petition also calls for the rehabilitation and eventual release of the dolphins currently held in what activists call captivity. While all parliamentary petitions must be reviewed by the Standards Committee regardless of signature count, a higher number of signatures adds weight to the public’s message.
As of now, the petition has gathered 940 signatures. With greater public support, it can send a strong and clear message to decision-makers.
The petition was launched on 16th June and will remain open until 16th August – so if you support the cause, be sure to sign and share it.
