A new space for cat lovers, and cats, has just officially opened in Żurrieq, marking the launch of Malta’s first public Cat Café.

The project, which forms part of an electoral promise to create more cat cafés and dog parks around the island, was inaugurated by Parliamentary Secretary for Fisheries, Aquaculture and Animal Rights Alicia Bugeja Said, together with Parliamentary Secretary for Public Works Omar Farrugia.

Located in Triq il-Belt Valletta, the Cat Café offers a dedicated space where visitors can spend time with stray cats in a calm and safe environment. It’s also designed to provide shelter and care for these animals with facilities that allow for feeding, socialising and post-neutering recovery.

“Projects like this play a key role in the care and protection of stray cats,” Bugeja Said said at the launch. “We’ve opened a beautiful space where visitors can spend time with these animals in a safe setting. It’s a step forward in building a more animal-conscious society.”

She also encouraged other local councils to follow suit. “We want to see more initiatives like this across Malta, because protecting abandoned animals should be a priority for all of us.”

The Public Works Department carried out maintenance work on the area to make the space more welcoming for both the cats and the humans who care for them — including cat feeders and regular visitors.

“This is about creating a better environment, both for those who visit the area and for the animals themselves,” Omar Farrugia said.

Żurrieq mayor Rita Grima also praised the collaborative effort that made the project possible, thanking local councillor Marisa D’Amato, Executive Secretary Josianne Cilia Munford and the volunteers and entities who supported the initiative.

“This is a proud moment for the Żurrieq Local Council,” she said. “After months of work, we’ve opened Malta’s first Cat Café managed by a local council. We’ve created a space to welcome street cats, including a quiet room for post-op recovery and a place for feeders to interact with the cats in comfort.”
