StreetCat Rescue Malta and Animal Guardians Malta, founded by dedicated animal lover Carmen Coleiro, are turning to the public for support with a new fundraising campaign.

Carmen, which helped countless cats in need and provided valuable therapy, found herself struggling to keep up with the financial demands of providing food and medical care to 300 cats.

In the 90s, she  created a student group of young individuals from various Maltese localities.

They built shelters for cats in fields and abandoned areas, and held corner meet-ups with locals to discuss neutering and caring for stray cats.

Soon enough, she had launched the StreetCat Rescue Malta Facebook page and subsequently founded Animal Guardians Malta.

Her dream of creating a specialised Cat-Therapy centre came true two years later.

The centre, located inside St. Vincent de Paul Luqa, uses rescued cats as providers of love therapy for humans experiencing difficult times.

Studies have shown that animals can help humans heal through their love, making cat therapy a valuable resource for those in need.

The Cat-Therapy centre has been running for seven years with the support of a loyal team and many volunteers, along with generous donations from the public. They have partnered with Dr. Schiro, a caring veterinarian who supports their cause.

However, the financial demands have grown increasingly difficult to manage.

Carmen herself personally spends €400 a month from her pension to buy cat food for the shelter, amounting to €150 a day to keep the cats well fed and healthy.

As a result, they have launched a fundraiser with the goal of raising €5,000, which will cover two months’ worth of cat food for the shelter.

Any donation, big or small, will help provide much-needed sustenance for these cats, most of whom have been rescued from situations of abuse or abandonment. The public is also invited to visit the Cat-Therapy centre on Sunday mornings between 11am and noon to see the shelter and meet the cats.

To show their appreciation for the support they receive, the organisation will share updates with donors, thanking them from the bottom of their hearts. The team and volunteers continue to express their gratitude for the help they receive, making it possible to care for these 300 deserving cats.
