Meet Milo: Tiny Hedgehog Rescued During Ranger Patrol

Article Featured Image

A hedgehog no bigger than half the size of a palm has been rescued after being found alone in the middle of a road in the north of Malta during a night patrol.

Last week, rangers from the Malta Ranger Unit were on their way to investigate a report when they spotted what looked like a stone in the middle of the road. But as they got closer, they realised it was actually a tiny Algerian hedgehog in serious danger.

Too young to survive on its own, the hedgehog, now adorably named Milo, was immediately handed over to Wildlife Rescue Team Malta, the licensed NGO that cares for and rehabilitates this protected species.

Just minutes later, Milo was safely in the hands of a dedicated volunteer who will make sure he gets the care he needs before being released back into the wild.

Hedgehogs are fairly easy to spot at night as their bodies reflect light, but due to their small size, they’re often mistaken for stones. If you’re driving along country roads, slow down and take a second look, that “stone” might be a hedgehog trying to cross safely.

The Rangers are encouraging everyone to save +356 99999505, the emergency number for Wildlife Rescue Team Malta, and to drive carefully on country roads at night, especially near fields where hedgehogs and other wildlife may be crossing.

And if you want to support the amazing work being done by both the Rangers and Nature Trust – FEE Malta, you can. 10% of proceeds from hedgehog lapel pins go directly to their conservation and rehabilitation work.

We’re wishing Milo all the best and looking forward to the day he can be safely released back into the wild where he belongs.
