‘My Heart Is Broken’: Animal Volunteer Announces Abandoned Dog Bruce Put To Sleep

An animal volunteer has expressed her displeasure after Bruce, an 11-year-old dog who was left abandoned after his owner passed away, has been put to sleep.

Maria D’Amato from the Innocent Paws NGO had earlier uploaded a video of herself playing with and feeding Bruce and urging people to adopt him.

Warning that his late owner’s family didn’t want to take him in and that sanctuaries are full, Maria said that Bruce would be put to sleep unless he could quickly find a new home.

“Without a place to go, Bruce has no future. Nothing will change that fact. Right now, he doesn’t need opinions; he needs a home.

“This is our last chance to save him. If you can help, please reach out immediately. Time is running out,” she said.

Although her video got a lot of traction on social media and people did reach out to express their interest in adopting him, Maria later informed the public that it was too late and that Bruce had unfortunately been put to sleep.

“And the cruellest part? Just minutes after it was done, three people came forward offering to take him. But it was too late,” she said.

“I am writing this to make one thing clear: When I say a situation is desperate and needs urgent help because the dog in question is going to be put to sleep, I’m not saying it for dramatic effect. It’s the painful reality.”

“No matter how many people say, ‘This is against the law’ or ‘This shouldn’t happen’, the fact remains that if a vet is given the impression that a dog has no quality of life, no home, and no future, some will go through with euthanasia. If someone truly wants to get rid of their dog, they will find a way, and it will be done.”

“Bruce didn’t deserve this. He lost his owner. He was just unwanted. And in this world, sometimes that is enough for a dog to lose their life.

I am so sorry, Bruce. I tried my very best to help you. My heart is broken.”

“Let this be a lesson. The next time a dog is in urgent need, don’t wait. Don’t hesitate. Don’t assume someone else will step in. Because next time, that dog might still be alive—if only people acted faster.”

“Rest in peace, Bruce. I wish the world had been kinder to you.”
